Thursday, May 26, 2011 Michigan Fishing Report

This coming Saturday, May 28th is the opening day of bass season on the Great Lakes and all inland waters except for Lake St. Clair, St. Clair River and the Detroit River which do not open until the 3rd Saturday in June. The early catch and release season has been very good so the opener should be strong as well.

COLUMBUS, OH - Spring wild turkey hunting opens in all 88 Ohio counties on Monday, April 18, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife.  The season continues through Sunday, May 15.

Weekly Fishing Report Michigan


On Friday April 1st, all anglers 17 years of age and older will be required to have their 2011 Michigan Fishing License. Copies of the new Fishing Guides are available at all license vendors. With many seasons closed right now, anglers are reminded that it is unlawful to take or attempt to take any fish outside the open season.

 Walleye are present all year long in the MAUMEE and SANDUSKY RIVERS in relatively low numbers; however, the number of walleye dramatically increases during annual spawning runs up these tributaries from Lake Erie.

Ice fishing is coming to an end in the southern half of the Lower Peninsula so anglers are advised to stay off any remaining ice. Conditions to the north might hold on for another week or so. Walleye, pike and musky season on the inland waters closed on March 15th however; Saginaw Bay and the Great Lakes remain open all year.

Indiana: The spring steelhead migration is just begining

As of March 7, a total of 68 steelhead have been counted moving past the South Bend fish ladder. This brings the total steelhead count up to 1,250 fish since the run began last fall. Steelhead fishing should start getting good once river temperatures hit 42 degrees which should happen any day.

Final numbers in Ohio's White-tailed Deer Season


COLUMBUS, OH- A total of 239,260 deer were killed during Ohio's 2010-11 hunting season, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. This season's total was below the record 2009-10 total of 261,260.

Ice anglers will need to use extreme caution due to deep snow cover on the ice. After the recent thaw, snow will now hide those areas that might be dangerous. Some lakes have lost all the snow cover and are very slippery. Be sure to bring some cleats with you for easier travel.

If your thinking of heading north to do a little fishing here's the latest report out of Michigan
Snow cover on the inland lakes as well as Saginaw Bay and Lake St. Clair has made travel on the ice almost impossible. Those heading out with quads or snowmobiles are getting stuck in large snow drifts. Slow down and use caution!

February Cottontails

Last week in northwest Ohio a bitter cold snap and heavy snow had the cottontails hunkering down and waiting for a break in the weather. That break came Saturday and Sunday as the wind turned strong out of the south and temperatures rose near 50.

Tip of the week: If the Cat ain't hunting neither am I


As an avid bow hunter, I’ve logged a lot of hours in the woods still hunting.
